For the same reason homosexuals exist. Freak of nature.
They are born with a short in the common sense circuit in their brain. Decisions are not made based on common sense, they are made based on how they feel.
The downfall of every society has come when its populace has become too "enlightened", "tolerant", and "touchy-feely".
That's usually when the huns come riding in and lay waste to everything in their path.
