In the Gospal of Mathew, Joseph is told to take Mary and the baby Jesus away to avoid Herod's kid killing rampage. He is then told that Herod is dead and they may return.....then later in Mathew (chapter 14, i think) there is Herod alive and well killing J. the B. when Jesus is grown up....what up?

First, the bible is a fantasy. The gospels you are referring to were written 35 to 120 years after Jesus died and they made most of it up. Historically, Herod was not in power when Jesus was born, so the story of their flight to save the killing rampage was taken from an old egyptian text about Isis escaping egypt to save her unborn son from a killing rampage of a king who was afraid her son would take over his throne. Sound familiar?

There were a number of leaders with the name Herod.
Herod the Great was the one ruling at the time Jesus was born.
His son, Herod Antipas, took his place when he died. Herod Antipas was the one responsible for the death of John the Baptist.
Since they are both just referred to as Herod in the New Testament, it IS confusing.

The family of Herod ruled over that region for a long time. There was Herod the Great, Herod the tetrarch, Herod Antipas and Herod Agrippa . They were all different men. Hope this helps.

Maybe there was another Herod? Was Herod's son's name also Herod, so that he was really Herod Jr?

Herod I was with the wise men. Herod Antipas beheaded John. I don't know if it is in the Bible, might just be historical records.

not the same Herod- may have been in the same family line (more likely) or just named so after the first Herod ruling in the same fashion.
