When the dish network guy shows up how does he activate the receiver?

Does he call in? Or throw a switch in the box somewhere?

He goes to setup menu and reads your set-top box ID.
Then he calls Dish support, he gives them your number and they enable it remotely.

He will probably insert a card into the box that is linked to your account that will allow your box to decode the channels you pay for.
