i would travel the coast, from bangkok to Hun Hin, then Chumpon, then take the boat from Chumpon to Koh Tao, Phangan, and Samui, then the ferry and bus to Kabei, boat to Pii Pii, and Phuket, then bus to Khao Lak,
Ranong, and then back to bangkok.

Best place will be relative, it will depend on your personal preference. Like the other poster, the beaches are in the southern and eastern part of Thailand. Cities, the 2 main ones are Bangkok and Chiangmai. Though I may add that the ancients ruins in Ayutthaya, Buriram and Sukhothai will be something unique to Thailand that maybe you should include in your list.

That depends on what you are going for. Girls, shopping, sightseeing, or the food. Did I mention the girls? There are some great Islands to visit not too far from BKK like Koh Samed ( A must if you like secluded islands with nice white beaches). For shopping, there is a huge mall in BKK called MBK center or an even better market on the weekends called JJ market.

well...it depends on you. If you like the island, beaches, the sun and water then the South of Thailand would be your best bet. (Turtle island, Trang, Krabi, Phuket, Satun, Chumporn)
If you like shopping and busy town, then Bangkok. Or you might consider Chaeng Mai if you fell like moutains and Thai temple. Have fun and welcome to our country.
