Resonance is what occurs in a filter or oscillator where a network of capacitors or inductors reaches a frequency where capacitive and inductive reactances have washed and the circuit becomes purely resistive. This is beneficial for filters, so that when the frequency isn't just right, you can use the capacitor or inductor reactance to attenuate unwanted signals. The benefit is that with a few components, you can create a useful and tuneable filter.
