Did you get new shoes that might be a bit short for your big toe? When you sit at the computer, do you put your feet under the chair or on the rail and bend your toe a certain way for long periods of time?
If it's not an injury, it could be gout. Do a search online and see if the symptoms match yours.

Sounds like you might be developing a bunion. A bunion will be at the joint, and to the inside of the foot. Some people don't have problems with them, other's get pain and as the bunion gets bigger, the pain gets worse. Check how your shoes fit, do they rub in that area of your foot, do you have good arch support, with or without shoes? I'd make the needed changes, as you age, your shoe size changes. The foot gets wider, causing the size to go up a bit. Wearing wider width shoes helps with bunions.

Hi

It could be lots of things... arthritis of the joint, it could be caussed by wearing ill fitting shoes or it could be an ingrown toe nail, fungal infection of the nail (can cause pain in the actual toe) or you may have knocked it?

If its bad see a doc.
