The best way to "experience" fondue for the first time is to find a fondue restraunt in your area. Though fondue is pretty easy to prepare, you would be amazed at how easy it is to screw up (people burn the chocolate, do not use the right cheese, etc...)

Typically if you are going to use fondue as a meal, it comes in three courses.

Course 1. The cheese fondue. There are literally dozens of cheeses you can fondue. Some mild, some more flavorful. I would suggest Gruyere cheese. Add in a little white wine. You would dip in vegetables, bread, etc...

Course 2. This is where you cook your meat/seafood in either a cooking oil or a chicken broth (oil works better). You heat the oil until it is boiling. You can cook chicken, beef, shrimp. etc.... Have a variety of Sauces to use for dipping.

Course 3. The chocolate. Again, this step is not as easy as it sounds because you can burn the chocolate. Use strawberries, marshmallows, angel food cake even pretzels.

You can buy the cheap little fondue pots for $10-15, but they are small and generally dont do a good job. I would recommend getting two larger pots that run on de-natured alchohol or sterno as the fuel. You can eat your cheese course while your oil is heating up for the main course. Then as you fondue your meat in the oil, which can take a little bit of time, you can clean the cheese fondue and begin to prepare the chocolate. This makes for a more "seamless" meal.

If you are "starving", dont fondue. It takes time to do and you do not get a ton of food all at once. For a change of pace however and a fun thing to do with friends and family, give it a try.

Google the word "fondue" and you can get all sorts of cheese and chocolate recipees.

Have fun.

Yes, it can be verra romantic for two. Chocolate fondue, with strawberries, pound cake, banana pieces, pineapple, unlimited choices, really. All you really need is a glass bowl, a pot that the bowl can fit in, a nice choc. bar (Dove or Cadbury), some delicious fruit or cake, cut in two-bite sizes, and some forks, or the long fondue forks. Even toothpicks or skewers will work.

Heat water in the pot until gently boiling, then turn the heat off. Put bowl on top of pot, add the chocolate and let it melt. You can add a little cream if you like. Yummy, and you can use any flavor candy bar you like, white chocolate bark, and you can add liqueur, after you take the bowl off the heat.

It is a Swiss meal literally meaning 'melted' in french. It usually consists of a variety of cheeses and some white wine melted in a special pot. You then use long forks to dip bread or whatever takes your fancy into it. If you love cheese like me it's amazing. You can have chocolate fondue with melted chocolate in the pot instead of cheese and usually fresh fruit being dipped in. Also very tasty.
