Start>Run>type msconfig>startup tab>there will be many items with a checkbox. Uncheck the items which you do not want. UNCHECKING CRITICAL ITEMS WILL BE HARMFUL. CHECK THE PATH OF THE ITEM FIRST. IF YOU ARE UNSURE DONT UNCHECK THE ITEM.

as said in the previous answers goto start>run>type msconfig> startup tab>... then uncheck the items which u think will not be required for you when your computer starts up. And then here is the different part of my answer. Restart your computer when it prompts you. When you restart your computer later the changes are lost. I have experienced it. It is best not to use ANY third party softwares to do this. msconfig is a part of windows and thats the one that must be used.

Through msconfig. Type the word in run and then choose what programs you want to run at startup through the startup tab.

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it.
You can find it here:
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

to stop a program running at start up go to start>run>then type msconfig and then return
thid will open the microsoft configuration utility(hence "msconfig")
then click on the start up tab at the end and then deselect the program you wish to stop during start up,then apply and press ok,you will then receive a message to restart your computer, click reatart now and your p.c will restart
once the computer restarts you should notice a difference in your start up time,if your not happy with it just go back to msconfig and deselect another program that you dont need at start up(note:deselecting start up items dont stop the programs from running, just the start up items)
there is a excellent program called advanced windowscare personal(http://iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/index.html),this has a option for start up items and its much more in-depth than the msconfig,it also has a option for deleting unessecary files and for finding and removing spyware,it actually advises you on the safest items to delete
good luck friend
