Choosing goals based on what you want is best. If you want to lose weight, you obviously want to weigh less, so the scale comes into play but it's just a mechanical box so shouldn't be worshiped like a God. I like working toward small achievable goals, meaning 5 pounds at a time (or less), even if you have much more to lose. Once you reach the first five, you work on the next. That way the tendency to be overwhelmed doesn't happen.

Other goals that are worthwhile are having your clothes get loose, then finally baggy. Being able to see your toes, being able to bend over and touch the floor, being able to jog around the block.

Fitness goals are great too. I ride a stationary bike, so I work on adding more miles each week. I once rode over 100 miles a week; now I'm riding about 45, so I'll slowly work back up. I may never get back to 100 miles but it gives me something to strive toward.

You'll notice what I mentioned above are goals you would be working toward. Some people prefer to choose goals that are "away" oriented, meaning they keep something else from happening. Those are people who are more motivated by goals such as not having a heart attack at 40, not getting hurt or fear based goals. If you'd work harder to keep something from happening, then you're motivated by "away" rather than "toward."

Everyone has some mix depending on the subject, so in the case of weight loss, ask yourself the last time you successfully lost weight (if you have in the past), what was the primary reason? What it something you'd gain (more attention, nicer clothes, etc.) or something you could stay away from (criticism, poor health, no energy, etc.). Once you know if you prefer "away from" or "toward" motivation, then it's easier to choose goals that will work best for you.

I also work on food habits with goals, so I may decide to quit eating pizza twice a week and now work on having it only once a week. Whittling down habits works great, because you're not playing the all-or-nothing game, but you are improving the entire time.

Weight loss should be slow and steady... to give your body time to adjust. If you get carried away and lose the weight too quickly you are more likely to put the weight back on as your body will go into starvation mode and desperately try and hold onto all the calories you eat. Aim to loose around 2lbs a week - that's a good amount. :-)

just give yourself a goal weight say one stone at a time that is if you are a few stone overweight even half a pound is quite a large lump look at a packet of lard keep one in the fridge as the weight comes off that is an inspiration if you lose one pound then that would be two packs as so forth you could lose a few the first week but it does slow down don't give yourself unreasonable goals its easier to keep off if you do it sensible bit by bit

Don't "try" to lose weight. Try to change your habits. Instead of a coke, try a diet coke. Pick up skim milk next time. Instead of a half hour of tv, do some work around the house or exercise. People who try to lose weight usually have a hard time doing it.

I would recommend writing down things to do and placing them on a 24 hour timeline. Try to stick with it and before long its as normal as going to bed and waking up.

Resist the temptation to rely on the scale to gage your progress. Go by reduction in body fat percentage rather than reduction in pounds. If you must weigh yourself, do so only every other week and keep it in perspective.

"Slow but steady wins the race". Regular exercise is the corner-stone. Low calorie, low fat, no animal fat, preferably vegan diet, may be lacto-vegan is better. One small serving of fish for omega-3 fats is also recommended.
