Best way to do this is to install vista on a separate partition - this way you can dual boot XP and Vista. Now if you want to remove Vista, you need to get rid of the bootloader and replace it with the XP bootloader. This is fairly easy to do with the XP installation disk - boot from the disk and choose Recovery Console". Issue "FDISK /MBR" and "FIXBOOT" commands, and you're back to booting XP only.

No you can't get it back,you will have to format your hard drive,the best way is to install Vista on another partition,and save your XP then you can run both.

You can have two operating systems on one hard drive and switch back and forth. Almost nobody ever does. I think just finding the information on how to do it would be pretty labor-intensive, but it's a simple job.
