I want to transfer a massive amount of data ( in excess of 1GB ) from one computer to another. Networking the 2 together is not an option, it needs to be via internet or software program. Free is preffered. Anyone have any solutions?

I'm not sure how to use torrent, but I don't want other people getting to my files. Yahoo chat is a solution, but I've tried it and it's slow. It also doesn't like large file sizes. Same with AIM. I'm looking for something like a direct connection, or as direct as possible.

Several ways are possible:
I. common physial media (CDs, USB drives, etc)

1. Do you have a CD-RW or CD-R drive? just burn 1(or more)cd
and take it to the other computer to read it.

2. You may want to compress the data first. If (for example) this
is a collection of old emails, then it would probably compress
down to less than 300 Mb from 1Gb. However, if this is pre-
compressed data (like mp3 audio and most video formats) it
will not compress much, if any, further and might actually
get larger trying to compress it and would take a long time.

3. USB (aka "jump" or "thumb" drives) USB drives are now
relatively cheap (< $50 USD for 1Gb) and could copy this
rapidly, also.

II. File Split utilties and email/transfer separately. Winrar (non free) will split files up into smaller chunks to allow them to be
better handled, and a quick google shows other free utils
like : http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/
That also will split and rejoin files together.

Without "local" access to both machines this will be a bear. Your internet connection probably has limits of upload and download speed, one machine will be uploading and the other downloading so the upload will probably be the issue.

If both machines are connected to the internet simply setup FTP hosting on one machine and FTP client on the other then FTP the files you need. It will work better than file sharing, remote desktop etc because it can self correct.
You can use Bulletproof or WarFTP both are good and not expensive. I think WAR offers a "free" edition.

FTP means FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL just what you are attempting,, transferring files between machines.

Option 1: Use torrent.
Option 2: Use IRC
Torrent and IRC support for resume, after pause or stop.

Option 3: Use Yahoo chat, and transfer from it vie File transfer menu. But yahoo chat not supporting resume after break.
