tattoo pain really isn't so bad that you should need any pain relief. trust me. i have had some very painful spots tattooed and they were all bearable. pain is part of the tattoo experience and you'll appreciate your tattoo so much more if you actually have to pay in pain as well. EVERYTHING worth anything is painful in some way.

IM A TATTOO ARTIST IN THE UK

listen DO NOT USE PAIN RELIEF !!!!!!!!

i will refuse to tattoo people under the influence of pain relief because painkillers and other forms of pain relief thin your blood and they make you bleed like a mother fu*ker when the needles go in not cool seriously

as for smoking weed and drinking alcohol before being tattooed same story i will not tattoo anyone under the influence of these things you will just bleeed uncontrolably

us tattoo artists arnt there to cause pain we are humans if you are nervous and worried about the pain we will go easy on you and talk to you all the way through

my advise is explain it is your first tat when you go in and if you want take someone like a friend or something for support that would be a good idea

im covered in tattooes nearly head to toe and im a tattoo artist so i know how much tattooes hurt and the answer is not much or people wouldent get so many

try this website this will put your mind at rest

Don't drink alcohol - no reputable tattooist will work on you if you come in under the influence! If you aren't fit to drive a car, how could you be fit to make decisions about having a permanent piece of artwork on your body?

I'm not aware of anything in general use, and if you're thinking of using something from the chemist as suggested by other answerers I would advise asking your tattoo artist about it first, in case there are any problems associated with this.

I'd also reassure you that the 'pain' of getting a tattoo really, really isn't that bad. It's often described as a hot scratching feeling. It's uncomfortable, to varying degrees (depending on whereabouts you're locating the tattoo), but I've never known anyone unable to cope with it (and I've spent a LOT of time in tattoo studios). I really wouldn't let the temporary discomfort of getting a tattoo be the overriding factor in making your decision.

Hope this helps!

theres a cream called emla you can get it in most chemists ,i get it in boots you put it on the area your getting tattooed about a hour before , but your still going to feel the tattoo getting done no matter what you put on the elma just numbs it a little , the tube would be a bit smaller than your little finger and is expensive its around a fiver a tube so if your getting a big tattoo your going to need at least five tubes. ive used it once before when i had my leg tattooed , then had the back of my neck tattooed without the cream , just felt the same no pain no gain it only hurts for a little bit ,worth it in the end good luck

It really does not hurt that much. I recently got a genital piercing and thought before hand t would be agony but it turned out not to be so bad either.
The tattoo artist will automatically offer some kind of anaesthetic and that is probably enough for well over 90% of the people who go for tattoos.
If you have a very low tolerance for pain I would not get a tattoo, otherwise go for it - you will be surprised how little it actually hurts.

It depends where you are having the tattoo as to how much it herts, some of mine made my eyes water while I was reading the paper for others. A couple of Ibuprufen an hour before hand helped me out but don't take anything that can thin your blood too much like paracetamol. Good luck and just take it easy, it herts alot less when your not so nervous!

i've got a very low pain threshold but i was told not to use any creams when having my tattoo done, as it prevents the ink from getting in.
the only thing i can suggest is to take paracetamol, but that's about it.
mine hurt like hell (it's on my spine, and yes, i cried), but hey it's only a few hours, a day at most afterwards, and then you've got a beautiful tattoo, so it's all worth it. i've had it for 2 years and no regrets!

having a tattoo is not like you think its gonna be, i worked in a studio and if i had lied to people they wouldnt have come back, but they did, time and time again. The outline is a little more uncomfortable than the shading or colouring, but your skin numbs with the vibration of the gun, relax into it and savour the anticipation of your new art. And whatever you do, dont drink alchohol, even the day before, it thins the blood and makes you bleed more, good luck with it all

I had no pain getting a colourful butterfly on the top part of my back and the cream would that be the same magic cream that kids get on the back of their hands before an operation if it is you might get it at the chemist in the hospital its called the magic cream to numb the area for any needles if needed

Yes but unfortunatley I don't know what it's called, it's a cream that can be bought from chemists that you put on before and it numbs the area that your having it. My friend used it said it was great as her tatoo went sightly over the edge of where she had put the cream and that area knacked, she has since had more, using the cream but she's on hols at moment so can't ask her the name of it sorry, but try asking in the chemist I think it also comes as a spray.
