I would like to just clear up all the garbage you are getting for answers. Firstly, guns are not powerful. The bullets that are fired out of the gun are what makes the gun anything. Secondly, power is not even a characteristic of a firearm. Power, by definition is just the energy of the projectile as it does work on the material or object it hits, so by definition, the most powerful handheld gun would be one that fires the biggest slug at a relatively low velocity in order to cause the most impact on the target. This is obviously an outdated myth, that if you just increase the size of the projectile, you will kill faster and more efficiently. HAH! Not one person on here even knows what they are talking about. The movie with the Rex was pretty funny, but my guess is that the rifle holder would be dead before he could recover from the initial recoil. What you want to look at when your talking about the most effective firearm, is velocity and rounds per minute. This is what makes an efficient weapon. With this in mind, the best "gun" would most definately be something in the assault rifle category rather than the pistol or submachine gun categories. As far as the most "powerful goes" there is yet to be a title holder, as tests can only prove the best of conditions. Even feild performance would hinder a weapons overall efficiency, so unless I or anyone else on here has fired everysingle gun in every single environment, then there will never be the most powerful gun.

The S&W 500 magnum revolver put out the most muzzle energy so the is the most powerful revolver.
Single shots handguns goes to the Thompson Center Contender's with the JDJ Barrels. J.D. Jones started out as a "Wildcat load" and today are into production...not a Wildcat cartridge any more. These are based on the 444 Marlin brass necked down to specific diametors, some that come to mind is the popular 6mm JDJ, 7mm JDJ, 375 JDJ and the 411 JDJ. The largest animals on this planet has fallin to the mighty 375 JDJ.

.500 Smith & Wesson makes .44Mag look weak (it's not weak, just not as powerful as the .500), .anything in 454 Casul cal., 480 Ruger, 460 S&W, .50 Action Express Desert Eagle (the Matrix's agent's guns), then the .44 Magnum. Big blasters, all of these. There are others that shoot rifle ammo, but they are special ordered guns usually.
And gun owners are not freaks by any measure. Anti-gun quacks are the real freaks.

There are many custom-made pistols chambered to fire rifle cartridges, but, to keep the matter simple, the most powerful factory model pistol is the .500 Smith & Wesoon Magnum, which has 50-70% greater velocity and several times the power of the venerable classic .44 Magnum of "Dirty Harry" fame.
Hand held guns....
The most powerful rifle, as answered above by DJ, is the .577 Tyrannosaur, a semi-wildcat manufacturede by A-Square Firearms, which has greater velocity and power than a .50BMG (Browning Machine Gun).
Also, contrary to what the bleeding-heart, gun-thieving Liberal DemaCracks that the "masses' have put in charge of our Congress would have the public believe, firearm enthusiasts and hunters are NOT "Freaks" nor mental abberants! Firearms and Patriotic fervor is what Made us free, and will KEEP us FREE!

"Hand held" and nor handgun?
The .577 T-Rex rifle.
Watch this video....
And folks that like guns aren't 'freaks'. First off, there is too many of us (at least a hundred million) and there is nothing wrong or disturbed about it. If your son likes guns, make sure he gets some safety training from a certified instructor....real firearms training takes out the 'fantasy' of guns and makes everyone safer with them.

If you are talking about handguns that use "handgun shells", then it's the .500 S&W. However, if you broaden the criteria, then it's a single-shot pistol using a highpowered rifle cartridge (like 30-06 Springfield Thompson Center).

particular. And idk ... it sounds like a gun. nevertheless weapons are plenty heavier than they seem, and the balk on one isn't something you could assume. you could continuously tell somebody who has never held/fired a gun, from somebody who actual has. it particularly is particularly ordinary to do. actual weapons are not toys .... or props. So, i could say you probable are sensible to no longer play with one in basic terms for kicks. xoxo ?

The .44 magnum is the most powerful popular caliber and this reputation was helped by Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry.
The .44 has been surpassed by other calibers, such as the .50 caliber Desert Eagle, and several large hunting calibers for revolvers. For most people, the .44 magnum is the biggest practical gun unless you do a lot of big game hunting.
