are going to have to stay there forever why not just conquer Iraq & turn it into one big military base so it will never become a terror state, it would be the perfect place to fight the war on terror, & Iran would be scared to death?

well the english stayed in india for 100 years.
they did their best to keep things together.
and right after they left there was a terrible civil war where one million people died and pakistan was partitioned off.
we can't stop the civil war in iraq.
not in five years, not in 100 years...

Wow, gotta love how much some people hate America. Hugh, (above) I feel very sorry for you. I would hate to be as unhappy as you are. But don;t worry there guy, I'll continue to fight and make sure you are safe and you have the freedoms to hate our wonderful nation.
As for the question. Ask a few troops; we know who is winning. War is not a 90 day task, especially not one as unconventional as this. You have too look at other instances as well. I mean, we are still in Germany. We are still in Korea. We are still in Japan. Not as occupiers, but we have military installations there that were set up to help ensure peace.
