Thrush is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. This organism lives in your mouth and is usually kept in check by healthy organisms that also live there. However, when your resistance to infection is low, the fungus can grow, leading to lesions in your mouth and on your tongue.
Possible indication for candida infection-Diabetes, AIDS, other causes of immunosuppression (eg, agranulocytosis, neutropenia, leukemia, immunoglobulin defects, disorders of leukocyte function), antibiotic use
The candida organism can spread throughout your body, causing infection in your esophagus (esophagitis), brain (meningitis), heart (endocarditis), joints (arthritis), or eyes (endophthalmitis).

Oral thrush is a yeast infection of the mucous membranes of the mouth and tongue.
There are two goals when treating oral thrush in adults. The first is to improve your immune system's ability to function. For example, in diabetics, good control of diabetes may be enough to clear the infection without other treatment.

The second is to directly treat the infection. For this purpose, your doctor may prescribe an antifungal mouthwash or lozenges to suck on. These are usually used for 5-10 days. If they don't work, other medication may be prescribed

If the infection has spread throughout your body or you have HIV/AIDS, stronger medications may be used, such as ketoconazole (Nizoral) or fluconazole (Diflucan).

In adults, oral candidiasis can be cured. However, the long-term outlook is dependent on your immune status and the cause of the immune deficit.

I contracted thrush immediately following open heart surgery. According to the infectious disease doctors who treated me this was a by-product of an over-dose of antibiotics. Apparently, we all have the "germs" for thrush in our systems and the good bacteria will normally keep them under control, however, in the situation of an overdose of antibiotics once the bodies "good" germs were dead - the bad ones signaled --Party On(lol) They attempted to treat the thrush with Flagyl - an antibiotic which then simply gave me a yeast infection. I eventually had to take a very expensive antibiotic (l,200 for 10 day supply). Thrush is also associated with Aids and causes the throat to swell and makes it very difficult to eat. Sometimes, other things can look like thrush it is best to see a doctor.

It is a yeast infection (candiadiasis). Very rare in healthy adults. Usually only happens in adults if you are taking antibiotics (kill the "good" bacteria that are normally in your body that protect from yeast infection), chemotherapy, or other medications, if you are ill or have immune disease, or if you are under extreme stress. There are good antifungal drugs out there, but most are prescription. You don't say where the thrush is - it can be in the mouth or female reproductive organs. There are good over-the-counter medications for vaginal yeast infection - most are creams or suppositories that you use for 1-3 days and work well most of the time. This can be sexually transmitted.
