First, has the dog been to the vet? I had a dog that developed an awful smell, only to find out he had cancer in his lymph nodes. I don't know how to get the smell off of a dog other than a bath. As for your house, set out a bowl of white vinegar in each room. The vinegar doesn't smell great, but probably better than the dog. Vinegar will remove almost any smell from a room, including smoke.

I run into this all of the time, I'm a pet groomer. First you have to comb his hair against the lay, lifting old hair and excess dander. Then vigorously brush him with the lay of the hair. Make sure you get every part of his body, legs, tummy, chest and the neck included, not just his back.
Now you need a good pet 'deodorant' shampoo. Not a skunk shampoo. They actually have deodorant shampoos for dogs.
Give him a thorough bath, being sure to get the inner thighs, pits and front of the neck. Make certain to rinse him thoroughly and when you think you've finished that, rinse him again. Now go and buy a bottle of 'thiotrol' at your vets. Spritz it on him and comb it in. Don't wash it out, just let it dry.
This is the type of bath that I give to those poor babies that just smell too doggy for their owners. Keep the thiotrol around and use it only when you're certain that you are smelling the odor again.
He'll need a thorough bath in this manner at least 3 times a year. Sometimes monthly.
Be sure to keep his bedding clean, washing it weekly if possible.
Vigorous daily brushing will help to keep the odor down.
Good Luck.
If you don't want to go for the price of the thiotrol or have too much trouble finding it, there are spray deodorants at the pet store that can help.

It could have to do with diet. Make sure you have your animal on a good food, this might prevent oily skin which produces that doggy smell. Again, if it that much of a problem I would recommend taking to the vet, they might have some answers for you.

Make sure it's not his anal glands either. Some dogs have the 'doggy odor' and it turns out to be oily skin and their rear ends, which a lot of owners don't know about. If they are impacted they can become infected and rupture out through the skin...OUCH! Constantly bathing your dog can lead to dry skin problems for him. Have a vet rule some things out, get him to a good groomer, and keep on top of odors before they get too bad.

I'm not sure why he smells so bad. There are so many reasons for it. I would take him to the vet. There may be something wrong. If not, the vet should be able to provide you with a shampoo that will fix the problem.

Try some tomatoe juice, that is mostly used when getting rid of skunk odors. It should do the trick for you in this case. It sounds weird but try a search for how to get rid of skunk smell and you'll see what I mean. You just drench him in the juice and rub it in his fur really good. That should eliminate the odor, good luck.

Your dog stinks because he or she has been in a smelly place for a long time or that his skin is in bad shape. Take him to the vet and see why.
