In January I had stomach problems with pain and cramping which the doctors thought was a virus so i haven't had the pains bad in a few weeks but now over the last two or more weeks i have terrible neck pain and stiffness. The pain is also in my lower back. In addidtion to this pain i am lightheaded. I also get headaches which can get worse accross the back of my head and temples sometimes. Went to doctor (neurologist) and he said to get pshyical therapy...doesn't really fix the problem i'm having does it...so any ideas of what the cause of my problm is?

The lightheadedness and abdominal cramping are suggestive or other disorders...but if the stomach pains have subsided, perhaps not?

What about other physical symptoms? Recent rapid weight loss/gain? Nausea/vomiting? Changes in your bowel/bladder patterns? Disturbed sleep pattern? The more of these types of symptoms you have, the more suggestive is it for either medical or psychosomatic cause. Whether or not these are related to your neck and back pain requires more medical workup...

You say you saw a neurologist. Did he order an MRI? This would show if you have a hearniated disk in your neck, which would definitely cause pain, stiffness and headaches. If you have a herniated disk, physical therapy can help, but it depends on where it is located as well as how severe the herniation is. If he did not order an MRI or other xray images, I don't think it was wise to recommend physical therapy. You can't rehabilitate a problem until you know exactly what it is. I would see a second opinion. Good luck.

Go to a chiropractor, they know the spine and what controls what and they can realign your spine. You should treat with ice, if you don't have an icepack you can use a frozen back of peas or corn. Also take an anti inflammatory such as Ibuprofen.

If the physical therapy isn't helping go back to the referring doctor. There are many, many possible reasons for neck and back pain ranging from psychological to hernia.
