Abreva is the only over the counter medication for cold sores in the US. You should apply the cream 5 times a day to the cold sore until it goes away. It works best if you start using it as soon as you think you are getting one.

Try Abreva. it works great. i use it all the time when i get cold sores from snowboarding. it will be in the chapstick aisle at your local pharmacy.
