Is it French, German? is there such a thing?

There is no official 2nd language.

As the others have said French, German and Spanish are the most commonly taught.

However, last month the government recommended that formal provision for teaching Mandarin Chinese, Arabic and Urdu should also be provided.

The UK does not have a constitutionally defined official language. Majority of the population speak English so that, in practice, is the 'official' language.

As far as general foreign language courses go in state schools, French, German and Spanish are the most common ones offered.
