Sesame Oil is extremely strong and should just be used sparingly as a subtle flavor. I learned this the hard way when I pan-fried some crab cakes in Sesame oil- What a waste of crab cakes! However it's great as a finisher in stir-fry.

Sesame oil has great flavour, but it's very string and distinctive.
I use it in oriental-style salads, or stir-fries as a flavouring but not as a cooking oil.
Olive oil I use sparingly too. For salad dressings, or sometimes to sautee, but since it also has a strong flavour I am careful not to use too much since it can be overpowering.
To choose between the two it totally depends on the dish you're making!!

I often use both rather than veg oils, thus depending on what I'm preparing at the time I make my choice, such as when preparing oriental dishes I most often use sesame oil, and when preparing Italian dishes I most often use olive oil...

It depends on what I'm making. For bread it's canola, for marinades and Chinese food it's dark sesame, and for everything else it's olive oil. It's hard to choose just one!
