Using fresh water gear for salt water fishing is ok, just rinse it all down very good after you use it, this includes rods, reels, lures, everything. Keep in mind that even when you buy saltwater reel, that they will rust just like freshwater gear does too, They just hold up a little better to the salt water better, but maintenence is still the same.

It really depends on what you are trying to catch.I use a simple Zebco 33 and lite spincast gear to catch trout, some smaller reds, and so on....You are right, cleaning your gear after a trip is a must.(soapy water then lube reel and rod guides) I landed a 51 inch red last year on a Abu Garcia 5500 C3 reel with 12lb test and a cheap 7 foot rod.The main thing is trusting your ability, your gears ability, and knowing how to catch what you are fishing for...I would recommend buying a cheap 7to 9 ft spincast rod/reel that you wouldn't worry about.Shakespeare makes one for about $20.00 that will handle most trips.I landed a 9 ft shark with this particular gear after moving the boat several times.
Good luck from a Texas fisherman

the main important distinction (untill you get into the particularly massive stuff) is that particularly some saltwater reels are regularly stainless or different corrosion resistant stuff. That pick could be prevented for shore fishing by skill of in simple terms rinsing your kit off afterwards. It will become a paing while you're doing particularly some offshore boat fishing, yet on your case, in simple terms rinse stuff off and be happy.

I've used mine in saltwater before. It is good to clean and lube them afterwards.

One can use them in salt water, however ya' know what salt water will do, so clean and DRY thoroughly and give it a good lube... "Tip up and tight lines produce more releasable fish"...

yes u can..........
i have,i do.........
just remember that u must clean and lube ur reels and clean ur rods.
freshwater reels do not have corrosion resistant parts like salt water reels.therefor they must be washed in warm soapy water when finished.
