Yes to some people depending what country you serve for.If your young and single with no children now is the time to do that kind of a job.

my husband was pushed into it 15 years ago but he's still in so it cant be that bad.also the training was apparently tougher then than it is now.
a lot of the lads he knew as a kid are rather on the dole,on drugs or in prison so in my opinion & his it was the right thing to do.
the wages are'nt that great for the lower rank with families but it's better than having no job at all,and you also get help the same as any other low paid job.i have known quite a few including my husband to hold down a second job.

our children have learnt disipline through him which sometimes seems a little harsh(sending to rooms for not listening, not being giving second chances,no treats if they don't finish their dinner, getting grounded for not coming in at the right time, doing chores for disrespecting adults.. things like that) but it does them more good than harm...if they were'nt getting this type of disipline i think they would be pretty wild.
so if you ask me it is a respectable job to have.

....and to some people that have answered, being a soldier entails a lot more than holding a gun all day, they are constantly training for certain situations sometime working 20 hours a day,in the last 11 years i have only know my husband (who is an infantry soldier) to be in contact with a weapon in bosnia,n ireland and whilst on guard on a military camp, and obviously on the firing range..and NO he has never shot anyone just incase anyone was wondering.
i think our lads do a GREAT job, and wives & partners should be given great respect too.

yes it is a very respectable career, anyway else yes diffferent is a complete idiot. for the officer comment and not making it first off let me say i could of came in as a officer. instead i decided to go enlisted and i would not have it any other way. the soldiers respect more prior enlisted rather then a four year degree holder straight out of college. your answer is yes it is a respectable job.

I do believe it is respectable in the highest manner!! I am very proud of the young men and women who choose the military as their career! It takes a lot of courage to sign up in today's world!
And for all of you who think the military is a bad idea, THANK the soldiers that keep your RIGHT to say such negative things by defending this great nation of ours!!! Without them, you wouldn't be free enough to say it!

I'd say less now than several decades ago. I keep seeing clips of new recruits in documentaries and new spots; they're always saying they have no choice or they need the money.. sounds like people aren't doing it to serve their country or whatever anymore, and half the time don't even know what they're getting in to. I can say my respect for the profession has gone down, anyway.

dont be snagged into thinking your military service will hold you in good sted for a good job when you leave because it will not, not any more.
i served for 12 years as an engineer, and when i decided to leave yes i recieved help getting courses i needed for civilian life but as soon as i was out it was cold bitter reality that took over.
most companies will ask how long you served and were you have been but thats it, in days gone by ex military were highly regarded in civi street for their discipline willingness to do the job and enthusiasum and loyalty.
however now your assessed as to whether or not youre likely to go mental and attack work colleagues if they say anything to you about current military affairs and that you may suffer flash backs and hurt yourself or others around you. i and many others have been discriminated against because i served my country.

so in answer to your question yes it is a worthwhile career but think about your future too because the grass aint always greener on the other side

It has been and always will be a respectable profession. It is up to the soldier how respectable he will make his career in the military.

that comment from the "officer" is an absolute joke to real men and women in the Military and as much as i hate to say it that person is a good candidate for "fratricide" look it up.

Any way yes any function you serve in any military branch is respectable as long as you put into it more then you expect to get out of it. that is the true meaning of selfless service.
