13, with friends.

I don't believe the best answer to this question has anything to do with age, despite the fact that others are answering it as such. I think it has a lot more to do with the maturity level of the child. Some children will be very capable, and safe, of going alone at a certain age, whatever age that may be, while others may not be either as mature or as capable of successfully pulling off such feats of independence.

In any event, I think the rule of thumb should be that there will be an agreed upon time and place either to meet back up with parents or other adults, or an agreed upon time to be home, and any deviation from those should be grounds for, at the very least, a phone call from the child to the parent. Part of being a parent is to teach both independence and safety to one's children. If the child proves that the child can't handle the independence or the safety or both, then one must seriously reconsider if the time is right to be granting such permissions to the child.

That depends on each child. I would think that at 13 though. My son went with a friend of his and his friends older brother to the movies alone once and I didn't have a problem with it. I know the family very well and know them to be very responsible. He was 11 at the time (he is going to be 12 in a couple of weeks). But I wouldn't let a couple of 12 year olds, in my town, go to the mall or movies alone just yet. Though I do let him walk a couple blocks to 7-11 by himself or with a friend.

I am stunned by the 15, 16, even 17 and 18 answers here.

11-12-13 is more like it. I think I was on the young end of that.

Do it gradually. Go to the mall with them; make arrangements to meet somewhere in X amount of time, separate. Then go to dropping off and picking up at pre-arranged times. THEN to 'Fine, here's some bus tickets.'

So much depends on the kid and the friends. And the neighbourhood. There isn't one answer for that.

Well I started when I was 11. But the thing is, I was a pretty responsible kid and my parents trusted me. If the child is 13 and up, I'd allow it. If 11 or 12 I'd probably talk to them about it first. Any ages under, I wouldn't let go.

I'd say around 14. My little sister is 14 and she goes to the movies with 3-4 friends each time.

When they prove they can conduct themselves in a responsible manner. But not before 12 or 13.

12 or 13 AS LONG AS they are with 1 or 5 or whatever friends because they shouldn't ever really go alone.

I honestly dont think they should till they are 15-16ish...Maybe 14 if there is a large group, but with only them or one other kid no. There is way to many weirdos out there.
