TOMATO SAUCE! Thats what we call them over here in Scotland.
I used to be puzzled when Americans mentions Catsup.... I was thinking of cats stuffed inside a bottle!! Thank goodness it wasn't. :-D
WHY is those called Ketchup? I am not sure... all I do know is that Ketchup has not always been made out of tomatoes.
Ketchup existed before anyone outside the Americas had ever seen a tomato!!
Originally this sauce was made out of pickled fish (Yuck!) and it originated in Eastern Asia.
The word ketchup is used in Chinese, Malay and Indonesian (e.g., kecap manis - traditional spelling 'kitjap manis').
So I guess the word 'kitjap' just evolved into ketchup.

ketchup is what Americans call it but me i call it red sauce I'm from UK an a lot of use call it red sauce or Tomato sauce .

i actually saw the answer to this on tv, see if i remember it well. the name originates in indonesia (or there abouts) for example the dutch use a souce that is called ketjap, it is more like soja sauce. the name ketjap really just says: formented sauce in their language, so tomato ketchup really just says, formented tomatoe sauce.

there are many sauces that are red ie. pasta sauce, cocktail sauce, so calling one red sauce might be to simple of a name and might lead to confusion. but you can call it whatever you want.

cause red sauce is either chilli or salsa not all red products can be called red sauce otherwise it just gets very confusing!
