Most people that haven't fallen in love with wine yet like very light and sweet wines.
For whites: White Zinfandel is light and sweet, but is never ordered by a true wine drinker. A Riesling is another white that is light and sweet but will not give you away as a newbie.
For Reds: if you are in an Italian place, a good Lambrusco is served chilled and is very sweet and easy to drink. Another light red (although not so sweet) is Shiraz. Yellowtail makes a decent one that is available everywhere.

I would recommend a Riesling for a first time wine drinker. Riesling is not a dessert wine, but it a sweet and easy to drink. Germany is known for world class Rielsing, but there are good ones made in the US as well.
Rieslings are great to drink with spicy food. They are also wonder to just sip and enjoy without food.

Start where wine makers start for those new to their product. Get a bottle of White Zinfandel, it promises to be slightly sweet, a little fruity, and generally easy to drink. Don't spend more than $5 to $7. Another option is a German wine, that tends to be sweet. Best of all, go to a store that has an expert on wine, they will steer you in the right direction.

First, don't buy your wine at Walmart!! Depends an where you are from. Best red wines are from Australia, Canada and Chile (my opinion). Hard to find in Ontario is Marachel Foch. My wife, who hates wine, loves a nice Foch. The LCBO (Liqueur Control Board of Ontario) does not sell it. Magnotta is the only winery that I have found that sells it. Where are you from? It would make it easier to answer question.

i HATE the taste of wine!!! to me it should taste like grape juice, afterall it is made out of grapes. i have found one wine that actually does taste grape juice-ish. i can't for the life of me remember what it is called!!
i got it at wal*mart. the bottle is square and it is a kosher wine. very good but still gave me a headache the next day... maybe i shouldn't have had almost the whole bottle.
