The Marines in college enters Naval Reserve Officer Taining. For scholarship, you should major in engineering. This is a desirable major for the scholarship.

Good Luck.

ROTC is not a major, it is a minor.

You will have to be accepted by the college, then join ROTC.

ROTC does not give a rats behind what you major is. I knew a guy who was prior-Service Special Forces who was in Air Force ROTC. He was a Music Major. We used to tease him without mercy, but he did it and last I heard was flying F-16's.
One guy I knew was a finance and accounting major. He wanted to go Army Finance. He was also prior service (pathfinder). The bottom line is, with the possible exception of a buisness management degree, what you learn in college won't really impact what sort of a leader you are, and ROTC is designed to make you a leader. So you can major in underwater basket weaving, as long as you can keep your grades up ROTC is cool with it.

If you want to make the Marines a career there are some degrees that will help you more than others in particular career fields.

For example getting a degree in a language could help you in an intelligence related job...(depending on what language it is... we need Arabic speakers now, may need Chinese speakers someday, don't really care if you know French). I woudn't get a degree in that though... a minor in a language should be enough to show you can speak it... and they only care about how you do on the DLAB (military language) test anyway.

You could become an "FAO" or "Foriegn Area Officer" if you got a degree in something like "Islamic studies" or "Russian Studies" or such. That would include the language classes, but also focus on the history, geography, and religion and culture of an area. You wind up being the resident expert on Outer Fubaristan.

Engineering is a big favorite, the military academies turn out a lot of engineering majors. Since the Marines don't have their own ROTC program (they are part of Navy ROTC) your engineering studies would help you with the Navy side of the house. It would also help with Combat Engineer jobs.

History is also a popular major.

There is a huge demand for people who can do computer science and keep the networks running. Everything runs off computers these days and they can break. If you can keep a comptuer network up and running J-6 has a job for you.

When considering your major you should think about the type of job you want to have while in the Marine Corps, just as you would choose a major based on what you would want to do if you were not joining the military. Once in, you have a lot of options just as you would in the civilian world. My husband went to OCS near the end of undergrad. He graduated with an economics degree. He then went to on to get his law degree before going to TBS. A foreign language is always a good idea in a growing global economy, so if that interests you it would be a good idea. Like others have said, however, you will find that your leadership skills are important. You should talk about specifics with your local OSO (officer selection office). Good luck!

Doesn't matter what major you major in, it's how you perform when you're at OCS and TBS. You just have to find what you want to do as an officer. I've heard of and know of some officers who think they're bad *** until sh!t hits the fan they're under humvees. Many Candidates have contracts as to what they want to do jobwise. I know a 2nd Lt who was a creative writing and history major, she's contracted to be a pilot.

ROTC is a program (club) that will train you to be a leader. Foreign language might get you a job in the 02 MOS and you can be a linguist.

My intentions are to major in Legal Studies and minor in Business and then go to Law School. When I do get my commission, they'll most likely make me an Infantry officer because of my prior (current) service.

Michael is right on, science or engineering will give you a great mind but the military looks more closely at leadership. If your grades are high, try getting a recommendation to the Naval Academy. If you can afford a good college, The Citadel turns out excellent officers.
My daughter was ROTC and is now a 2nd Lt. at Army Flight School in Alabama.
Good Luck and Semper Fi

ROTC will pay for college so if you are sure you want to be a marine you should sign up. Engineering will help as far as a major, but it doesnt really matter what you major in.

Any courses/major you choose that USMC may welcome.

The Marine ROTC is under the Naval ROTC for college undergraduates and graduates. And OCS is for college graduates who have not take the advanced ROTC course.

Hard sciences like Engineering or Computers are in high demand. It's better to keep a high GPA...3.5 or better as well as being active in the community..volunteer, hold leadership positions in college activities, play a sport(even intramurals)
