When the cross is embraced it becomes a sign of love and of total self-giving. To carry it behind Christ means to be united with him in offering the greatest proof of love … the choice is between a full life and an empty existence, between truth and falsehood.
Jesus asked of those who wanted to be his disciples: "If anyone wishes to come after me", he said, "he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Lk 9:23).
To carry our cross means that nothing is more important that Christ’s message of salvation. The message of salvation takes precedence over all. Just as Peter and Andrew dropped their nets, telling people about Jesus should be the most important thing in our lives. We should never be too busy to tell people about Jesus.

When Jesus used this picture of his followers shouldering their cross to follow him, the disciples knew what he meant. Crucifixion was a common Roman method of execution, and condemned criminals had to carry their cross through the streets to the execution site. Following Jesus, therefore, meant a true commitment, the risk of death, and no turning back (see 10:39).

It's like, don't leave it laying around in the street because a car could come by and run over it and cause a crash.
Some times it means to pick it up off the street and carry it safely to the curb or to a dumpster to get it out of the way of other stuff like sin.

We all have our problems.
Mine is a bad back and neck.
Quit complaining and go about the business of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Jesus said, "take up your cross and follow Me"; what that means to me is that we are to live up to His example. Being just human, we won't do it perfectly, of course, but with His help, we are to do it to the best of our abilities.

According to Christian philosophy your life is meant to be a burden to you. If you're having a good time you're not doing it right.
Now....get out there and suffer.
