there's interest from both of you. but both of you are unsure and shy.

for you to ask this shows your curiousity w the guy. try to do more than just smile at each other, maybe have a small talk and start to be friends. then, things should be clear enough for you to read what the situtation really is.

I take it you would like for this to move to the next step, or their is interest on your part to get to know him.
Talk to some of the other people in your office that might know him see what you can find out about him married or single. If he is single you can make the first move he may just be shy, and needs someone to break the ice.
He may be a very nice guy but you will never know if you never go for it.

romance at work is not a good thing, one of you may be sensitive to this and avoid it being known that you are being "friendly". is he married? if so, the people he works with know this and he doesn't want to be thought of as a cheater.
people can sense when their is chemistry between 2 people. and they can sense when 2 people have been intimate.
don't go to the friend zone, it's a downward spiral you will not escape, take responsibility for your feelings and act accordingly.

work is usually a place that is taboo for relationships try finding him after work that is if neither of you are married
