DO the newer designed VWs perform well in the snow? DO they have good safety ratings? Are they as sound mechanically as the 50s bug? How is the gas milage?

VWs have always performed and continue to perform well in snow. Don't expect AWD performance from FWD cars though. I recently drove through 12" fresh powder on a back road with a GTI, and I got through without any drama.

VWs have the highest safety ratings. Check out http://www.iihs.org

50s bug was a tank basically with very simple mechanics. These days everything is more complicated to make the cars handle, feel and drive better. VWs are still mechanically very sound, on par with the luxury European brands.

VWs have some of the more efficient gas engines these days. Their diesels are by far more superior to any other diesels or even hybrids out there. Getting real world 50mpg highway from a Diesel Golf is not unheard of.

I have had my 2006 VW Beetle for just over a year. I have driven the distance from western NY to central FL three times. It has been a great car. No problems and lots of fun. I always love the attention my cute little red bug gets. I would recommend the New Beetle to anyone interested in them.

New VW's are really nice and safe, the older ones arent as reliable. VWs perform really well for their class, if you are willing to pay more since they are made in Germany

They're not bad. Good as you're gonna get from Germany.
