The AA-1A just doesn't have the useful load I want (2 people, full fuel, and some baggage), the 1B does. Is there any way to increase the useful load on the AA1A without adding a 150 HP engine? They seem like a nice 2 place plane.

The 2-place Grummans are great little airplanes. I've never owned one but have logged 500+ hours in them. Economical and easy to fly, they have great handling characteristics and are historically low maintenance.

A couple of caveats... There is no nose-wheel steering, it's all done with brakes and a free castering nose-wheel which can mean if you're out of brakes, you're out of luck. The aircraft features a laminar flow wing which doesn't have "soft stall" handling at low airspeeds. They have a nasty spin, and are placarded against intentional spins.

If you are thinking of buying one, have an expert A&P check it out for delamination as they are prone to this.
