The answer to the question, "Do I Need a Passport to Visit Canada?" depends on how you are planning to cross the Canadian border. As of January 23, 2007, the WHTI requires American citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian border by air. So, all airports in Canada now ask to see passports from all people traveling from outside of Canada, including from the US.
The other date for travelers to note is June 1, 2009, which is when the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will require American citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian border by land or water.

No you do not. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative is an American based law. That is what has caused all the passport confusion. As such, an American based law cannot dictate what can come into Canada. A Canadian law does that, and we don't have that.

The confusion: You DO need a passport to "enter" or "re-enter" the USA by air effective January 23, 2007. The land and water ways will take effect as early as January 2008.

What is "enter" and "re-enter"?

"Enter" is when you are on your way into the the USA from somewhere else. eg A Canadian starts their trip in Canada and crosses into the USA.

"Re-enter" is when someone starts their trip in the USA and goes elsewhere and returns to the USA. That return portion is where you "re-enter the USA".

How does this relate to your question?
You do not need a passport to leave the USA and enter Canada. BUT...if you are flying you will need your passport to "re-enter" the USA. (until January 2008, when you will need your passport to re-enter by any transportation)

I have been going to Canada since i was a baby, NO you do not NEED a passport to enter Canada, but you do now need a birth certificate, a photo I.D. and there are a lot of questions, if you plan to enter thru Michigan, into Sagaw, plan to sit a while, there is an A.M. radio station you can usually pick up about 20 miles away that will tell you how long the wait is and such. Hope it helps. enjoy Canada and make sure to stop at Tim Horton's, it's awesome!!!

You do not need a passport to get into Canada, but if you are wanting to come back to the US you will need one if you are flying. Its not Canada and Mexico that are requiring passports for entry. If you are driving you can get back into the US without one. I would suggest having both a drivers license/govt issued ID and a birth certificate if possible to expedite things. After January 1 of 2008 you will need a passport even if driving.

It's another good question, of course you need to have a passport to identify who you are, those slip in without passport is illegal and would be deported if caught.

I don't think the law which requires this has been put into effect yet, but verify it before you travel.
