I've tried all the over the counter, melatonin, prescription and I finally got Lunesta from my dr. it is a prescription med, and nothing seemed to help me sleep and this went on for over a year. I feel like a complete different person, it makes you fall asleep and you sleep so peaceful, and you wake up, which this is me, feeling great. I didn't know how sleep deprived I had been having maybe two hours sleep a night sleep and when I did sleep, would toss and turn, and this medication for sleeping, I wake up feeling like a million dollars, and it really is worth that to me now, cause I''m actually on time for work now..but, I've tried ambiem, even the dr. gave me serequil which is an anti-pcychotic drug, but, common to use for sleep and yeah it made me sleep too much, and felt horrible and gained thirty pounds right off the bat, the first month, I quit that, and went back to not sleeping, and I just can't tell you what Lunesta has done for me...I feel wonderful in the morning and I am not a morning person, I'm a night owl, but, having to work, can't be, so, I hope you find your right medicine or treatment, but, this has been a God send to me.

You didn't say how long you've had insomnia--if that IS what you have--so I don't know what else you've tried. Look, going to sleeping pills as your first or second, or even third option may not be the best thing for you. Have you tried warm milk? It's not just an old wives' tale, milk has an additive called L-Trytophan, that is proven to put be a sleep aid. What about a boring book (Charles Dickens always does it for me, one page and I'm out like a light!), putting your radio on "sleep" and tuning to a "lite" music or classical station or all-news station before you go to bed?
Also what are your activities before you go to bed? Are you eating, exercising, or watching exciting TV before bed? All those can be factors as well. What about changing your pillow, changing the temperature in your room, or darkening your room if necessary?
There are good remedies for sleep--including pills prescribed by a doctor--that you can try. From my own experience, I would strongly suggest checking out non-pill alternatives first. Good luck!

Sleeping pills is additive and makes you sleep very light. Even after many hours of sleep, you still feel tired.
I used to work in graveyard shifts (7pm to 7am). Therefore I need to stay awake on my off days and switch over to night shift on my working days.
I am able to sleep using the following:
- melatonin : I took 1-2mg. I have colleagues that take up to 6 mg. The average is about 3mg. This is non additive. Another point is melatonin need no doctor's prescription. You can read more from this site
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin
I have even read from books on melatonin that it is an anti-aging pill. Not bad. You sleep and stop growing old.
- use lavender aromatherapy. Lavender smell help me to sleep after a night shift.
Some addition tips I used
- The most important rule is not to force yourself to sleep.
- Get a boring book with a topic you want to learn. Read until you are ready to sleep. Listen to classic music as you read.
- No activity before you sleep. Avoid watching movies, reading ghost stories, pillow fights, exercising.
- Keep the clock as far away as possible. The ticking make you even more afraid and awake.

If your serious?
A half of an "over the counter" UNISOM can be taken 1 hour before bedtime on a regular basis without any adverse affects.
Another suggestion is to SEE A DOCTOR!
Sweet dreams!

the best are prescreption meds, ofcourse.
but you can try some over the counter ones. melatonin is a natural sleep hormone and is also sold in tablets.
try drinking warm milk and streching which relieves melatonin from muscles.
