I mentioned to my parents about taking a mini vacation to NYC on a weekend over the summer. What are some of the things to do besides shopping? Such as monuments and landmarks? What are some of the best hotels to stay at and what are some of the best resturants to dine at?

From Battery Park (the Lower South Side) up past Gracy Mansion...up town. you'll love it... you can get "anything" you want in NYC... and some things you don't want... have fun... I grew up in that City... Oye !

The "best" hotels in the City can run up to several hundred dollars a night, so be careful what you say! I quite like the W Hotel, great chic luxury hotel, and all the way on the other end of the spectrum is the Pod Hotel in midtown which is small and funky and quite cheap.
New York is filled with great, casual restaurants. I suggest you splurge and buy a copy of the latest Zagat's Guide (available at any bookstore) or more modestly Time Out New York. My one strong recommendation: DO NOT fall into the common tourist trap of going to a chain restaurant while you're there. I always see a line of tourists snaking out of TGIF or Bennigan's because they don't know any better.
