MrsJS sounds correct as far as the procedure is concerned. Stainless is designed not to rust. There are specific wedges on the market that are designed to rust (trusty rusty) so you can get more spin (ignore the answers that say it will give you less control). Part of what gives you spin out of a bunker is the sand between the clubface and the ball; the rust acts the same way. But don't expect the rust alone to give you spin. You still need to learn how to swing properly, and that can take lots of lessons and practice.

I think you scared everyone with the word rust. You actually mean oxidize. You won't find chunks of rust on any of these clubs. The oxidation has more to do with the feel of the shot than with back spin. Clubs that oxidize have not been chrome plated and are left in their "raw state". Cobra started this first with the Phil Rodgers Trusty Rusty series of wedges about fifteen years ago. The series was re-created about six years ago but it didn't do very well. Other manufacturers have also tried the same process but it just hasn't caught on and won't until you see the pros using them.

I think you have a mizuno. They always advertise as making of grained flow forged with mild carbon steel. I think they plated them with something to make the club shinny. I have many mizuno set some are like 20 years old. I play with lots of mizuno; like MS 203, MP 29, MP 33, T-zoid. None of them rust!!! But, may be because the covers have never worn out. If you brush off the nikel chrome plate they may rust.
Usually, the clubs that rust they advertise as raw iron; like Mizuno wedge raw iron. Titleist Spin Milled oil can finish also rust. So do lots of cleveland wedges.
Essentially, the clubs that rust do rust because they designed to be rust. Check out the link below, usually the one that rust label with yellow stickers saying the clubs will rust over time. I suggest you buy these clubs rather than making yours rust, because if you rub the club faces with sand paper, you may destroy the glooves.

Only if your clubs are an 18/8 stainless will you get rust. Take a magnet to see if there is any pull from the clubs. If so, then soak them in some salt water, than lay them in the sun. If there is no magnetic pull, you are not going to get them to rust no matter what you do. Your other possibilities are to get different clubs, but I agree with one of the other posters, that rust would inhibit your ability to control the ball.

first any one whotells you you lose all control proabally can't hit straight. i had some grainflo forged clubs i rusted the face and it helped me. first i took some fine sandpaper to the face you don't want to use heavy sandpaper cause it'll put deep marks in the face, then soak in salt water then set in sun you may have to do this a few times but it will rust.

Are you crazy ?? Rust will hamper your spin control, you just need to ask someone at the driving range to show you how to get more spin on your ball, it took me about 30 minutes to get it after someone showed me,, and i have in turned showed many others, please do not do anything to your clubs, if you have rusted clubs they will rust faster in some spots than other spots, then you will have pits on your clubs and then you will loose control of where you ball is going,, just ask , golfers as you know love competition so they will teach you so you will be a better challenge to them,, i hope this helps, Happy Shanking,,,(LOL)

primarilly the only clubs you'll want rusting are wedges, and if they're supposed to rust, they'll do that on their own, in fact they'll rust enough that periodically you'll want to to keep it down with steel wool

the type of finish is what makes them rust or you have to hit enough balls to wear the protective finish off so it will rust.
