Don't step on it's tail! You can pick him up & cradle him on his back. Pet his stomach & see if he's relaxed. Labs & retrievers are great with kids, but are high energy the first year. If you think a lab is a great dog, but don't want all the shedding a labradoodle or a goldendoodle is a great choice. You won't get papers with them as they are mixed. But we have two & couldn't be happier. They are fantastic with our kids and shed very little. They're so smart & great swimmers. Make sure any puppy you get has been home raised & it's best to meet at least one if not both parents. Best wishes & contact me with any questions. I'd be happy to help!

If you have kids that I'd have to say the bigger the better. Small dogs are more high strung. And because they can't tolerate pain the same way a larger dog can, they are more likely to snap. My favorite breed of all is the English Bull Terrier. They stand about knee high and are very stocky. They were bred to tolerate pain, and no matter how much pain they are in, not to turn on the owner. The only problem with them is that they are almost impossible to train. They listen when they want to and that's it. My daughter was 4 when we got a Bullie and she can't do anything wrong to him. And when he's had enough, he just gets up and walks away. Beautiful dogs!

Try a shelter dog. I am not one of those people who is a purist one way or the other on shelter pets vs pure bred. I actually own both. But, when picking a shelter pet, you will be exposed to several dogs at one time and can compare temperments on the spot. Your family can visit with several dogs or puppies to detemine which one fits. Also, please consider starting with an adult dog. Being as it's your first, you won't have to deal with the puppy stages and training, but will be able to move straight into establishing a daily routine---for the most part---lol!

I grew up in a house with medium to large size dogs ( Labradors and Retrivers) which are always thought of to be good for families. However now I am grown up and have dogs of my own ( terriers) I think smaller dogs are much, much easier for families and just as 'doggy'. The bigger the dog the more it need - more exercise, more food, it poos more, barks louder, pulls on the lead more. We have a Boarder terrier which is much easier to manage and train but still loves to play and run around like a big dog. I think terriers are a good bet as they are like big dogs but in a little dog body. Welsh terriers, Highland terriers are all nice but we are Boarder terrier fans now!

I also think bitches have (in general) calmer temprements than males and are a safer bet around children.

Good luck.

Id reccomend a labrador or golden retriever. They are really good with kids. Its been my experience if you get a really small dog, often they are pretty nervous. Kids may mean well, but pulling ears and tails might make them jumpy. Generally though its how a dog is treated that makes him or her a good dog.

A Golden Doodle. That is what our family has and he is "so sweet" according to my wife and she is not a dog person. Indeed, I have owned many dogs and I find this one unsually affectionate and easy to traing. Poodles are smartest dogs and retrievers second, and I can really see it. Also, he does not shed much, but he is medium sized, so not a lap dog

you should go to North Shore animal league in long island because they have the perfect family pets that you can meet and your children can get a sense of what dog they want.

Golden Retrivers are wonderful family dogs. The are loving, tolerant and funny, though they do shed a lot.

What dog will suit you depends on your lifestyle and what you want in a dog.
