Most 'TC's have "Best Answer" less than 10%

I received this email from a guy whose "Best Answer" rating is over 70% (yes that is seventy percent)

Yes, I have similar concerns. I too try to research the majority of my answers and give good in depth answers. I have 1000 "Best Answers" and I'm Level 6. But I'm not a Top Contributor because my answers are spread over a large number of categories. I think it would be good if there were an analysis of the answers to weed out those who simply answer "No" or whatever to anything. Maybe a word count to see which users are actually giving in depth answers. Those with a word count over 50 or so would get a better "worthwhile" rating, while those with short answers wouldn't get a high rating. Apply the average word count as a multiplier with the number of answers to give an over all rating of how worthwhile the respondant is.

Yeah. I don't really see the point in it. All the 'regulars' have one, but that just means we spend a lot of time in this section.

At times a Q can be awash with orange badges. But sadly that doesn't tell you anything about the 'quality' of the answers!

I don't actually know what triggers a TC badge. I just found I had it one day. And being a 'nobody' I would happily opt out. I'd rather people made up their own minds as to whether I 'contribute' or not.

Though I like the Network thing.

Well, at least it's based on "best answers" (in one section, not sheer number of answers - can you imagine the avalanche of spam that would cause?

However, I think it's a bit unfair that some people need to have over a thousands best answers in "their" category to become TC, but in other categories (well, sub-categories, but it counts the same), ten will get you there. However, since there are no special benefits other than the "badge", I don't suppose it matters much.

I think if they're going to do badges, there should also be some for high "best answer" ratings. Maybe something like a bronze badge for over 25%, silver for over 40%, and gold for over 60%, or so? (That way, everyone can "slack" a little once in a while, and there is some plays for those cases where you write a long, detailed answer giving someone all the facts of why what they asked about doing is a bad idea, and the pick as best answer someone who just wrote "Sure, you can do that, I think it's a good idea. Good luck!" (Of course, this system should only apply to people who have a certain number of answers - someone who only ever gave one answer and that was picked best should not immediately get gold. Maybe 100 answers and up. Or 500.)

(That annoys me, btw - people who pick as best answer whoever agrees with them, and ignore all the info to the contrary provided by (no matter how many) others. If all they're interested in is a "yes", why bother posting in the first place?)

I don't like it much either.

I posted a request on yahoo suggestion page asking to opt out of the top contributor thing.

I few hours later I got an email telling me that yahoo was deleting my suggestion. No real explanation was given.

Figure that one out.

Still, Length of answers alone, does not necessarily make for a good answer.

Look at all the pasted bible verses that people put up. They often take up a full page and I doubt if any one ever reads them.

Yahoo seems to have a problem with leaving well enough alone.

Love and blessings Don

My best answer rate fluctuates between 19 and 21% at any given time.
I've seen people with 50% best answer rates who are level 1 and level 2.. the percentage is based on the number of answers given.
As for the person who said we have multiple accounts, I personally don't.
I think it's a silly rating system. I hate the label.. reminds me that I spend way too much time here.

I only have an 11 % best answers yet I am a top contributer
why ?
because i spend much time on one board giving support and answering the best i can
I dont get picked as best answer very much because most of my answers are defending people , defending minorities and correcting any misconceptions or misunderstandings people have
do i deserve to be top contributer ?.... as much as the person with 70 %

I believe they are going by numbers only. How many questions and answers. Not whether what they contribute has any value.

That's funny you should write the same as I was thinking.
Just the another day, while looking at the new changes.
(Is new right?)
It defiantly would make one wonder! Hmm

I dont see what this has to do with religion.

Its just an icon, I personally don't care whom has extra colored pixels under their and who has plain white ones.

Top contributors are well, top contributors.

We may not be the best contributors or the best answerers, but we dedicate ourselves to this section.

Contribution is about dedication, and that's what the top contributor title is all about.
