West Village has the best shops and cafes. The East Village is more trendy with hipsters. Try Jane Street or Christopher Streets in the West Village and just walk around. You will find plenty of shops and cafes.

Some of the Greenwich streets where you can easily shops and can find cafes. A list of them are given below:
Greenwich village: Hudson street, bleecker street
West Eighth Street: Jane Street
East village: St . Marks place
Soho: West Broadway, Spring street, Prince street
Here you can shops any consignment shops.

Bleeker Street, MacDougal Street - - those were the two major places 30 years ago and I doubt it has changed - - have a nice trip
