Their chin looks kinda dirty. Its hard to describe. Their only change has been a short distance move from a house to an aparment. Any suggestions?

Sounds very much like feline acne.

We have four cats and the three girls always ate out of plastic bowls with no problem...in November we rescued a Male.
After about a week this black stuff showed up on his chin so we took him to the Vet and that's what the Vet told us it was.
Plastic bowls hold bactiria and that's what causes the acne.
We switched to glass bowls and the problem was solved.

We wiped his chin daily with warm soapy water to help give him some relief from the itching.

I'd either put a call into the Vet or take him in and have him checked to be on the safe side, but it sounds very much like feline acne to me.

Good luck

If you are feeding from a plastic dish, it is probably the cause. As the previous poster identified, plastic dishes often cause sores under a cats chin. This is not only because of retaining bacteria but also the chemicals in the plastic. Switch to a stainless STeel or ceramic bowl.

If it does not clear up after you switch the bowl, or if you weren't using plastic in the first place, then it may be fleas or another irritation. In that case you should visit your vet for a diagnosis so that it can be treated.

Hope this helps. Take care.

My lil retard does the same thing. My vet told me that it often happens in cats. Remember that cats use their tongues to clean themselves, so you can imagine that the chin is kinda hard to keep clean. They get mild allergies & itches, and find it hard to clean it off, so they scratch that little bit harder.

Take them to the vet when this occurs, and rule out ringworm etc. Once thats all clear, use a salt water wash - just make a salt water mix, and dip a cloth in it, and wipe it over the chin a couple times a day.

Hope this helps!

It could be fleas, and you could be seeing flea dirt or eggs on the chin that makes it look dirty. Cats are also prone to acne on their chin which can cause some itchiness as well.

Could be from the stress from the move, some animals have a harder time adjusting. It also could be an allergic reaction to something, perhaps in the new apartment. Either way, you should take them to the vet and find out as soon as possible.

The so called dirt on their chin, could quite possibly be flea poop, in that case you need to take your kitties to a vet and have them checked out.

Sometimes animals get allergies ( seasonal )-- my dog buddy has allergies and he gets "hot spots" where a spot on his skin becomes very irritated, hot and itchy so he scratches and chews down to the skin where it bleeds also. Go to the vet and have him/her see if that is the problem, if it is they can give you some drops that you can put right on the spot =)

It could be mites, fleas, or even ringworm, cats can burst into ringworm just from stress! And moving can be stressful for them! Take them to the Vet to be sure, you might need to give them some medicine.
