Non-US citizens CAN join the US Army. It is not common, but happens. There are a number of Korean citizens in the US Army. Each case is different and requires some time. You would be expected to speak and understand English very well (you will have to that the Defense Aptitude Battery test to determine your abilities and areas of interest). I am a retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and had a non-US citizen in my unit a few years ago. Since I was not in the recruiting command, I do not know the details, but I do know it can happen.

I spent 20 years in the US Army, and feel that they were the best years of my life.

Don't be put off by the negative answers above, while some soldiers are tragically being killed and injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, the numbers are still low (the 2,300 or so killed there in three years compares to more than 10,000 killed in one day during World War II in the South Pacific or at Normandy). In addition, fewer than 1 in 10 soldiers is in a combat unit in the US Army.

There are also educational opportunities in the US Army, during and following your tour of duty.

I admire your interest. Good luck with whatever you do.

You would need to have a Green Card (Permanent Residence) in the USA. Given that you are in Japan and a Japanese national, I doubt you are in possession of a green card.

However, if you do have a green card, joining the military is a fast track way to citizenship, should you want it.

The French Foreign Legion would take you though, if you want to join. http://www.info-france-usa.org/atoz/legion/index.asp for more information

you must be a U>S> citizen or an alien living in the U>S> which means you would have a green card in order to join the U.S. armed forces. As well as a high school graduate that is 12 years of schooling and be 17-35 years old
