Well, my mum saw on my back today that I have this red mark (about two cm long) that isnt normally there.

I'm wondering because two days ago I went sailing with a few mates and because of recent storms we had bluebottles where we were. Five of my friends were stung.

I'm wondering if this could be a blue bottle sting? Would you able to feel it on your back?

If it's not, do you have any more suggestions on what else it might be?

A bluebottle sting is felt instantly. It is like a tingling sensation, followed by a lot of pain, burning sensation and swelling later on. If you did not get this, then you were not stung by a bluebottle. Also, 2cm is a bit small for a sting. It is normally longer than that, due to the length of the bluebottle tentacles.

By the way, take a bottle of white vinegar with you when you next go to the beach. If you get stung, put this on as quickly as possible. It will neutralize the sting very quickly. It is cheap insurance, and I can testify that it really works..

"Bluebottle tentacles will cause a sharp, painful sting if they are touched, which is aggravated by rubbing the area. Intense pain may be felt from a few minutes to many hours and develops into a dull ache which then spreads to surrounding joints. The affected area develops a red line with small white lesions. In severe cases blisters and weals looking like a string of beads may appear. Victims may exhibit signs of shock. Children, asthmatics and people with allergies can be badly affected and many cases of respiratory distress have been reported in Australia. "

You would have known instantly if you were stung by a bluebottle, pouring vinegar on the site will put a stop to the pain.

No Bluebottles do not sting. Much worse, I'm afraid. If your skin was broken, even a little, it might have layed eggs under your skin. I'm not going to go into detail as to what might happen if she did lay eggs, but you will notice in a matter of days. Let it suffice to say the condition will get worse very quickly. Nothing a doctor cant fix, so don't panic, but do have yourself checked out, like now. Go!

Blue Bottles are big flies, well in the UK they are and they do not bite or sting.
Horse Flies are a different matter, those buggers bite you .
