you should drink water throughout the exercise, it is very easy to get dehydrated when you sweat.

Cold water can cause cramping. Room temperature is better.
A little water in advance and then in slow and steady amounts is the way to go. Don't gulp a lot or you can make yourself sick.
How much you can take depends on how strenuous the activity is. Beyond a certain level water can make you somewhat sick but you will have a huge need for it as soon as you slow down.
Along with all the other reasons you need it, water is important to flush out the waste products generated by exercise and without it you will be a lot sorer the next day and not be able to work out as long and will be more prone to injury.
By the way, most sports drinks are a joke. They are little more than overpriced sugar water.
If you buy a water bottle be sure it is not type 3,6, or 7 plastics as there are health problems with those.

The thing about water and health has been taken as gospel truth. With qualifications, here's my take:
When you do work out, it's a good idea to have water handy. Going without reduces performance, but you don't want to get waterlogged. (I did that eons ago at junior high football practice, and it bites.)
Small sips every few minutes is fine; chugging will make you a hurtin' unit. Balance - or poise, if that sounds better. Not a romantic notion, but you'll go much farther.
Better to be hydrated *before* working out; it's like keeping your car tuned up so you don't have to get it repaired so often. If your pee is clear and almost colorless, you're OK.
Look to reputable authorities on the matter, but in the end find out for yourself. Try exercising without water one day, then with on another, and see what goes best - not just what you prefer, but what also yields best results. It's your body; learn to work with it.
All the best in your workouts!

I took dancing lessons for 13 years, and we were encouraged NOT to drink water during class, or if we did, very little. I think one can get cramps. I'm not sure, but I would just drink enough to feel more comfortable. And when you finish exercising, drink all you want.
