It doesn't make a lot of difference. They will sort it out. If he is stationed somewhere, the quickest would probably be APO. If he is being deployed on an ship the quickest would probably be FPO.

Most Marines will have an address to a FPO (Fleet Post Office) however occasionally they will be assigned to a base that under the jurisdiction of the Army which would give then an APO (Army Post Office). An example would be several bases in Kuwait where all branches of the military receive their mail through an APO.

I've never heard of anyone having both, but if this is the case, you choose.
FPO, like someone said is a "Fleet Post Office", meaning it's attached to the NAVY. (Has nothing to do with the Pacific region.... "AP" after the FPO denotes Pacific Region, "AE" is Atlantic, just to clarify.)
APO is army and air force.
My guess would be, since he's a Marine, to send it to the FPO.
Good luck.

It's my understanding that FPO means Federal Post Office. My daughter was stationed in Europe and had an FPO AE address.

It depends where he is in the world...do u know? Basically, it's been my understanding 4 years, (I was a U.S.Navy brat) that "FPO"=Fleet Post Office, meaning the "Pacific" fleet, in the Navy that could mean a ship out of San Diego, But usually San Francisco, .CA. (I think all of it goes physically out under the Golden Gate, or is flown out from San Francisco. "APO"=Atlantic Post Office, & usually means on a ship operating out of an Atlantic port. all this mail goes thru N.Y.,NY I think. So if ur "jughead" friend is on/out of an atlantic-based ship on duty say, in the Med, or off Malta, use the APO. If he's in Guam, or in any Pacific "hood", use FPO.
