Wikipedia is always a good first start. A battery of 1.5 volts means that the potential between negative and positive is one and a half volts. This is a measure of how much energy that is stored in the battery. You might think of it as the negative side of the battery being that much higher than the positive side. Therefore, when the terminals are connected that is the amount of push that the battery will provide. The amps will be the amount of current that will run from one side of the battery to another. This will be a function of the resistance of the wire or device that you use to connect the two poles of the battery.

You might try Wikipedia; my original source was the Radio Amateur's Handbook, published by the American Radio Relay League in Connecticut. It is convenient to draw an analogy between an electrical setup and a water system. In each, you have pressure: water in PSI, Pascals, or bars; electricity in volts. You have flow: water, gallons per minute; electricity, amperes. You have power: horsepower, and watts. You have controls: valves, and switches. You have energy storage: water tanks, and batteries. Your 1.5 volt battery is typical of several sorts of battery chemistry, including the older carbon-zinc cells and the more modern alkaline batteries which have largely replaced them.

V stands for Volts. It is the unit of electrical pressure, analagous to water pressure in a hose. You can get a good book about basic electronics at Radio Shack. Or, go to your local public library for a couple of beginner's books. Good luck with your interest.
