all the answers are good. I want to add one more thing if you live in a cold weather location. save a large empty metal coffee can, by a few cans of sterno heat, matches or disposable lighters. put all this stuff inside the can and replace the plastic lid. puncture a small hole in the lid to let any gases out just incase something leaks, i never had a problem but you never know. if you get stranded, remove the contents of the can and place a open can of sterno inside and light it. set the can on the floor, center the sterno can inside and crack open a window slightly. this will provide hours of heat even enough heat to warm food or water. this can be a life saver in an emergency.

Always have a First Aid Kit in the car just in case. A blanket too. Depending on the winter weather, if your area is prone to snow falls, always have a spade, a warm blanket and a flask of hot drink just in case you are stranded . A bottle of water too.

Three 3 things are needed for survival anywhere

1) Knife (a pocket knife is fine)

2) Source of ignition (Lighter)

3) A Flashlight, ( A mag lite solitair is very small, yet very bright)

I ALWAYS have these three things on me wherever I go

a Cell phone too but, If there is no covererage in the area, it's useless....The above mentioned, will save your life.

Torch, warm blanket, warning triangle, jump-leads, first aid kit.

Then a small bag... with raincoat(s), gloves, jumper(s) and a few pound coins. Fold two £10 notes in some folded paper and tape it under passenger seat. Real handy if you get in to a situation you need instant cash and haven't got any - and stops you taking/spending it for everyday things when its taped under seat.
