i've thought about this from all angles, and i can't think of any valid, legitimate, or practical reason why Spanish should be the official language. I'm curious: Are you playing devil's advocate in a debate? Or anticipating counterarguments?
Perhaps you should start by listing the reasons why Tagalog shouldn't be the official language. Then you can brainstorm reasons why Spanish would best fill any voids. But I honestly dont see your proposition as finding any strong support.
Good luck though!

There is no reason to make it Spanish the official language. Yes, the language is largely influenced by the Spanish language but it is not the same language at all. For the misinformed, Filipino is the official language not Tagalog which is one of the dialects of the country.

To alienate it's people. That what they get for years of Spanish occupation then to be ruled by the U.S. Why let them speak Tagalog(which is half Spanish anyways).

It would be in the Filipinos' best interest - for the sake of communication amongst themselves and with the outside world. And besides, you don't really think that the iliano/cebuano speakers are going to cave in to the Tagalog plurality, do you?
