Put it on the grill, high heat, then as soon as you see a little bit of blood seep out flip it. When you see it bleed a little bit on the other side its done, medium rare.

The perfert grilling time will also depend on the cut and thickness of the meat, as well as the outside temperature. We use the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com. Just enter the details and it will give you printable instructions for how to grill your steak medium rare. It also has grilling tips.
Many steak recipies recommend letting the steak stand at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before grilling. Also let the meat rest for 5 minutes after grilling to keep it nice and juicy.
Hope this helps.

1) Congrats on being one of the few people who will properly prepare a steak, wanna get ya hand broken in this house ? Cook a steak over a gas grill, wanna get ya hand broken again ? put ketchup on a steak that I just cooked over charcoal.
Get the charcoal really HOT, use 20% more than what you think you need (I use match lite), Put the steak on about 1 min per side (Depending on the size of the steak), add fresh black pepper, always UNDER COOK if ya not sure, slice the steak and check, if it's under done she can always go on the grill again for another min or so. Unlike pork and chicken, "Flare ups" are welcomed, and encouraged, to get a steak juicy, you must "Seer it".
ENJOY !

As others have correctly stated it is about the blood. When you see the blood begin to appear flip the steak. The time limit will vary on too many factors. So, go with what you can see for sure.

Well. Personally I'd use charcoal myself. You really gotta test these things out. I'm gonna say 3 to 5 on each side.

It depends on your fire. And whether or not you have the lid to the grill. With a good hot bed of coals, and the lid, about 5 minutes on each side should be fine.

we use a meat thermometer so I don't know the exact time. I think it is 2-3 min on each side. Just make sure the coals are hot enough.
