The cold war was triggered by the defeat of Nazi Germany and its subsequent occupation. It was called a cold war because there was no fighting. Both sides, NATO Alliance and the Warsaw Pact built up huge stockpiles of war supplies. We build a bomb, they build one bigger. We build a bigger one and they do the same. Basically, the US out spent the Soviet Union and it had to come to an end. But do not think for one second all those pinko commie ba$tard$ wouldn't stick a knife in our back to be in control again!

The Cuban missile crisis was a product of the cold war. Nikita Khrushchev was trying to move nukes closer to the US via the upstart commie Castro. JFK called his bluff and Khrushchev backed down, removing the missiles.

Combatcop has the answer for the cold war, I think.

The Cuban missile crisis was about nukes in Cuba. Most of what happened there happened in the UN chambers. The US Navy blockaded Cuba to prevent any more missiles from arriving. Finally, just as the US was preparing to invade Cuba, a compromise was reached that allowed both sides to save face. The US would remove its missiles from Turkey and the USSR would dismantle and remove its missiles from Cuba. Everybody shook hands, exchanged hugs, then went home and drank heavily.

I think the cold war was triggered by the losses Russia suffered in WW ll. The Germans penetrated deep into Russia and the Russians lost millions of people repulsing them. Stalin said 'never again' and set up Eastern Europe as a buffer zone to protect Russia against another invasion.

Watch the movie Thirteen Days. It gives a pretty good look at the whole story.
