2007-03-10 20:10:03 · update #1

Ok in the west its means, A man standing up against China's goverment as told my many western TV, newspapers etc etc.

Yes P.S at first I used to think of it as the western view, then having travel the world and open my mind there are always 3 sides to the story there side, that side and the truth.

I would have to say the eastern us more near to what rich as said. In my terms, my terms it means to me that his photo has many meanings depending on what side of the fence you sit on. Are you anti-commie, or that one the side of the chinese goverment having seen tian'men square and the lack of sectiry of how close it is to the main govement builds ie you jsut ahve to cross the road and you in here has made me ponder the question what would happen if a huge group of anti-war protesters desided to camp on the whitehouse's lawn for over a month and reused to go in todays climate.

But history is history, many govements have done things that they should be ashamed of themselves if we were to look back over time. Now today if it ever happen again due to china more intergradation into the global world and its markets are now more linked with globalisation they would have to think twice about repeating anything like this again if they will want to grow as a world player.

But in my view, it was a man standing up for what he thought was right and a tank commander doing what he thought was right.

It depends. I feel it is both a brave young person standing up to what he feels is a repressive state (whether right or wrong at the time - plus, China has changed since 1989) and a tank commander unable to run over a fellow citizen.

The "official" view is a potentially violent protestor trying to topple the government facing a tank being driven by a commander, who was under orders not to kill anybody and who was trying to move his tank so it would not injure the young man.

Chinese students are not completely ignorant of what happened at Tiananmen Square in 1989, but what they are taught differs from the Western view. After all, there was a threat to the Chinese government from these protestors; any government would resist such events. This is what many young Chinese people think (if the topic ever comes up), but this is not a hot topic in China any longer since too many events have happened since then.

Yes, I know the photo of which you speak, taken in Tiananmen, it is a very symbolic image.
"Okay, in the West it MEANS 'A man standing up against China's GOVERNMENT' as told BY many Western TV stations, newspapers, etc."
Perhaps drutazo would care to share his interpretation?

Tiananment Square protests in 1989.

Did you know that if you're in China and type "Tianenmen Square" in Google Images that NO pictures pop up?

It's really weird how 1 billion Chinese people let a corrupt, communist government completely waste their lives with terrible policies and laws. Very sad and perplexing.

The Tianenmen Square massacre was one of the more disreputable things that the current Chinese government has done. The government probably keeps a close lid on copies of that picture, and of the story that surrounds it.

Well it was the Tiananmen Square Massacre, and it represents defiance to oppressive Communist rule

It's whatever you think it means. You could see it as a symbol of the people standing up to the Communist state or man versus machine. It's open to interpretation.

I am not Chinese, so I cannot say what it means to someone in China. As an American, I can say that it means I am fearful that communists have infiltrated the US Government (pelosi, clinton, kennedy, boxer, ginsburg).
