I believen they learn how to use there imagination and that is how there creativity starts to build up.

They use their imagination and you can also see what they've learned about real life situations. When I was pregnant with number 2, we bought a doll so my son (almost 2 at the time) could get used to a baby around. When baby number 2 was around 3 months old, we saw my eldest son cradling the doll and kissing it's head and singing to it. He'd learned that you must be gentle with babies and was showing that through play.

They learn a lot more than you think and it shows you what they have learned while growing up as well.
It stimulates the imagination,motor and verbal skills and to get along with other kids (generally). In some activities they also learn to solve problems through trial and error.

if you mean by pretend play is imitating, then it is very important for their growth. cause it will help them know the things that adults do and help them know what they are suppose to do when they become adults. it is important to let children play and let them know the things that adults do without stopping them from playing.

immagination and social skills. say they are pretending that their little people are playing togeather or something. they are making them socialise.
