I'm using Microsoft Word 2007 to write medical reports and would like to use standard medical abbreviations (many of which are symbols).

Word has the function "Insert Symbol" which lets you insert all of the available symbols. If they are used across a variety of fields (like the degrees symbol and all the Greek letters) then they will be in there. If you are looking for very specific symbols that are only used in medicine, you might need to download a special font for that.

I'm not sure what type of symbols you need, but I know that Word has built in symbol abilities. I know that in Word 2003 it's under 'Insert > Symbol', but it may be different in 2007.

Click in your document where you want to create the drawing.
On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click New Drawing.
A drawing canvas is inserted into your document.
Use the Drawing toolbar to add any shapes or pictures that you want. or create your own symbols.

www.google.co.uk type in the symbol you want and either save it to your file and then insert into word, or just copy and paste the photo :-)
